Sandra Chevrier is a Montreal-based artist and full-time single mom. The series “cages” is about women trying to find freedom from societies’ twisted preconceptions of what a woman should or shouldn’t be. She represents women encased in ‘cages’ of brash, imposing paint or comic books. The work symbolizes the false expectations of beauty and perfection, and the limitations society places on women that corrupts what truly is beautiful by placing them in prisons of identity. This, in turn, creates an expectation that women become superheroes. Sandra uses collage or loose and heavy textures of paint to evoke a sense that the women are emerging from a surreal world within the canvas.
